A US Air Force base facility in Washington state was partially evacuated Thursday after a mysterious hazardous material made several people sick.
24 people at Fairchild Air Force Base fell ill after coming into contact with an “unknown irritant”, with 14 of them being sent to the hospital.
The affected building on the base was evacuated while a HAZMAT response team was sent into the base’s Logistics Readiness Squadron building to determine the nature of the irritant.
According to a statement from Fairchild AFB, “A HAZMAT response was called to the Logistics Readiness Squadron, Building 2045, at 8:30 a.m. 24 personnel reported feeling affected by an unknown irritant. 14 personnel have been treated by base personnel and transported to local hospitals for additional follow-up evaluation. The building was evacuated and emergency responders are on scene. The incident is currently under investigation.”
Emergency responders are currently trying to determine what the irritant is in the LRS building, which was first opened in 1942.
