The Air Force has officially announced a retirement date for General Mark Welsh, the Air Force’s chief of staff.

General Welsh is set to retire on July 1st but the date of the chief of staff transition ceremony has yet to be set.

It is also not clear who will be chosen to replace Welsh but experts say there are three top candidates, according to Defense News.

  • Darren McDew, head of U.S. Transportation Command
  • Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle, head of Air Combat Command
  • John Hyten, head of Air Force Space Command

Gen. Mark A. Welsh III graduated from the U.S Air Force Academy in 1976 and became the chief of staff in 2012. He has been assigned to numerous operational, command and staff positions. Prior to his current position, he was Commander, U.S. Air Forces in Europe.
