Airman who was found dead at Andersen Air Force Base identified

Officials at Andersen Air Force base have released the identity of the 36th Wing airman that was reported dead on Monday.

According to a press release from the base, Lt. Col. Patrick Whelan, 46, was found dead in his private quarters from an apparent suicide on the base.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life,” Brig. Gen. Andrew Toth, the 36th Wing commander, said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and loved ones.”

Whelan was the deputy commander of the 36th Mission Support Group at the base in Guam.

Whelan from Washington, Maine, is survived by his wife and two children
