Shots fired near MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, base put on lockdown


MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa was placed on lockdown early Friday after reports of shots fired, U.S. Air Force officials confirmed, but it is not an active shooter situation, according to news reports.

The Air Force installation is four miles south of downtown Tampa.

Sources did not confirm a reason for the lockdown, but several social media users posted screen shots of an active shooter alert.

However, Fox 13 Tampa, citing sources, says there was no active shooter.

The alert was sent at about 7 a.m.
